In the Kitchen with Polly

"It's all about the recipe!"

Author: Polly

It's all about the recipe. Really, it is. I have amassed quite a collection of recipes from my favorite cookbooks, food magazines, friends, the Internet, and more recently my adult daughters. I test every recipe I post. Some I've been cooking for years, decades even, a few I have made only a few times. I don't post mediocre recipes. I don't post good recipes. I post GREAT recipes. I started “In the Kitchen with Polly” on January 1, 2010, a joint venture between myself and my non-cooking but most excellent webmaster, proofreader, technical goddess and all-around bestie, Ratty. (Not a joke. Ratty is her chosen name. Her Mama didn’t do that to her, she did it to herself.) Last year we hit a snag. The website went up in flames. Monstrous flames. It took a long time to sort out what happened and even longer to recreate what was lost. Hundreds of pictures, gone, and every recipe we posted (300+) over the last 14 years had to be reformatted. It's done now though. I like this brighter version. Scroll through. Find something you like. There’s a search button and there are also tags to click on if you want to find a recipe for a specific food. If you need it, the print button is on the preview page and at the end of the recipe page. Enjoy! Let me know if you try something!

Crockpot “Refried” Beans (No Pre-Soak Needed)

PollyApril 26, 2026April 26, 2026

My daughter married a Mexican man. Now she (or he) makes a pot of these “refried” beans every week. Her father-in-law claimed to not like refried beans. Said he never ate them. Eighteen months later, he’s eating these refried beans!…

I have a grandchild with ARFID, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. She strongly denies it. She just says she likes what she likes and she’s fine. OK, but since the age of about seven he’s had about 22 very specific…

Agua de Jamaica/Hibiscus “Iced Tea”

PollyApril 26, 2026April 26, 2026

Agua de Jamaica is my drink of choice with Mexican food. The taste varies a bit from taqueria to taqueria and restaurant to restaurant, usually based on the ratio of the Jamaica concentrate to water and the amount of sugar…

One Dough-Four Cookies

PollyDecember 9, 2025January 13, 2026

The actual recipe includes five cookie versions, but four are much easier to make at once: make a double batch of the dough, divide it in half, then add half the quantity of ingredients for each variation to make four…

Peppermint Bark Cookies

Mmmm, the flavors of Christmas! For me they are gingerbread, eggnog and peppermint 🙂 A decade or so ago, Bon Appetit magazine featured this Peppermint Bark Cookie. It’s a shortbread base that’s topped with melted chocolate, crushed candy canes, and…

Happy day after Thanksgiving! If you haven’t done so already, boil up that carcass to get some delicious turkey stock, then make this soup—it’s delicious! You have to make this with your turkey carcass, have to, have to, have to! …

Fruity Pumpkin Bundt Cake

PollyOctober 10, 2025December 2, 2025

This bundt cake is moist, pumpkin rich, studded with 2 cups of dried fruit and nuts, with a splash o’ rum, a hearty heap o’ cinnamon and topped with an orange-cinnamon glaze—what’s not to like?!  I’ve been making this cake…

It’s hard to explain how easy these are to make, but I might start off by saying that they are not entirely made from scratch—I use puff pastry from the freezer section of my grocery store 😀 If you can…
