In the Kitchen with Polly

"It's all about the recipe!"

Author: Polly

It's all about the recipe. Really, it is. I have amassed quite a collection of recipes from my favorite cookbooks, food magazines, friends, the Internet, and more recently my adult daughters. I test every recipe I post. Some I've been cooking for years, decades even, a few I have made only a few times. I don't post mediocre recipes. I don't post good recipes. I post GREAT recipes. I started “In the Kitchen with Polly” on January 1, 2010, a joint venture between myself and my non-cooking but most excellent webmaster, proofreader, technical goddess and all-around bestie, Ratty. (Not a joke. Ratty is her chosen name. Her Mama didn’t do that to her, she did it to herself.) Last year we hit a snag. The website went up in flames. Monstrous flames. It took a long time to sort out what happened and even longer to recreate what was lost. Hundreds of pictures, gone, and every recipe we posted (300+) over the last 14 years had to be reformatted. It's done now though. I like this brighter version. Scroll through. Find something you like. There’s a search button and there are also tags to click on if you want to find a recipe for a specific food. If you need it, the print button is on the preview page and at the end of the recipe page. Enjoy! One caveat: I am not a food photographer or professional blogger. I have a cell phone, but harnessing the light and plating a dish are not skills of mine. Please don't judge a recipe by my photos. I promise your dishes will look much better IRL. Polly

I like coffee.  No, I loooooove coffee.  Not that hot, black and bitter brewed coffee, but that expensive stuff brewed by the tablespoonful and mixed with steamed and foamed milk.  I have lived with an espresso machine since my ex-husband…

My friend and webmaster told me this picture is awful. She said the steak looks dry. Hmpffff. It might be all that, but the recipe is a good one. Please don’t be put off by the horrible picture! Last weekend…

Chicken Tortilla Soup

PollyJanuary 30, 2013January 13, 2026

This soup is delicious—would I post it if it wasn’t?  Rhetorical question: of course not!—I am also posting this recipe because most everyone I know enjoys tortilla soup, but not many of us have a tried and true recipe in our…

Photo by Home & Plate I love Honey Baked ham.  Love it, love it, love it! But have you heard the definition of eternity? Two people and a ham!  Thank goodness I have a panini press for grilled ham and Swiss sandwiches. Thank goodness…

Banana Pancakes with Caramel Syrup

Hmpfff. I just got through looking at the two hundred and seventeen pictures of a recent bride’s Hawaiian honeymoon.  As one of her friends commented, “The envy hurts“!  I went to Hawaii once. I did. It was with my kids’…

Blueberry Cornmeal Pancakes with Spiced Maple Syrup

Love blueberries! Love cornmeal! So when I saw this recipe, having bought blueberries just yesterday and forgetting why, I jumped up from my chair (well…, not exactly jumped) to make a special, impromptu breakfast! I saw this recipe on Pinterest…

Four Cheese Spinach Manicotti

PollyMarch 20, 2012July 24, 2025

I must admit, I make a pretty mean manicotti. I’d forgotten how good it was until I made some on the spur-of-the-moment this week. My manicotti is probably not very authentic, seeing as I have no genuine Italian reference point…
