In the Kitchen with Polly

"It's all about the recipe!"

Author: Polly

It's all about the recipe. Really, it is. I have amassed quite a collection of recipes from my favorite cookbooks, food magazines, friends, the Internet, and more recently my adult daughters. I test every recipe I post. Some I've been cooking for years, decades even, a few I have made only a few times. I don't post mediocre recipes. I don't post good recipes. I post GREAT recipes. I started “In the Kitchen with Polly” on January 1, 2010, a joint venture between myself and my non-cooking but most excellent webmaster, proofreader, technical goddess and all-around bestie, Ratty. (Not a joke. Ratty is her chosen name. Her Mama didn’t do that to her, she did it to herself.) Last year we hit a snag. The website went up in flames. Monstrous flames. It took a long time to sort out what happened and even longer to recreate what was lost. Hundreds of pictures, gone, and every recipe we posted (300+) over the last 14 years had to be reformatted. It's done now though. I like this brighter version. Scroll through. Find something you like. There’s a search button and there are also tags to click on if you want to find a recipe for a specific food. If you need it, the print button is on the preview page and at the end of the recipe page. Enjoy! One caveat: I am not a food photographer or professional blogger. I have a cell phone, but harnessing the light and plating a dish are not skills of mine. Please don't judge a recipe by my photos. I promise your dishes will look much better IRL. Polly

Grilled Mint Marinated Lamb with Pistachio Pesto

PollyAugust 1, 2025September 16, 2025

Absolutely one of our favorite BBQ dishes! We serve the lamb with a grilled, herby flat bread or homemade pita, and a rice pilaf. There’s no Pistachio Pesto in the photo, unfortunately, but if there were you’d be amazed by…

Blueberry Lemonade

Thought I might like this…and I was right! Loved it. The blueberry taste is not pronounced, but the color they give to the drink is fantastic. Bbbb…b…bbut…the lemonade is pinkish RED, not blue! Surprise! Once-upon-a-time we had a delightful 4…

Roasted Broccoli with Parmesan and Lemon

PollyJuly 24, 2025July 24, 2025

I love roasted broccoli, in fact it’s the only way I make it now. If I want something a bit over the top, or if I want to show off a bit, I make Roasted Broccoli with Parmesan and Lemon.…

Chocolate-Cherry Brownies (for Grown Ups!)

PollyJuly 24, 2025July 24, 2025

Soak dried cherries in port, then add them to the batter of these brownies for a tasty departure from the every-day, kid-favorite brownie! I love the unexpected flavor zing from the dried cherries 🙂 This is a cake-like brownie, usually…

Focaccia

PollyJuly 22, 2025January 13, 2026

When my kids were little they used to call this “salty bread”. When Abby’s college friends asked for it they called it “Fa-fa-fa” (this was before Focaccia was a “thing” in the US). I’ve been making this for years, from…

Apricot Cream Scones

PollyJuly 22, 2025July 30, 2025

This is my all-time favorite American-style scone—no butter or jam needed! The chopped white chocolate and diced apricots provide plenty of sweetness, and there’s no butter in this recipe, but there’s plenty of cream! The original version of this recipe…

Strawberry Cheesecake Dip

PollyJuly 22, 2025August 28, 2025

Don’t have time to make a fancy cheesecake or strawberry shortcake for dessert? Make this instead. It’s easy and it’s delicious. I can’t believe I haven’t posted this previously, as I’ve been making this since I was in high school,…

Brie on the Grill

PollyJuly 21, 2025September 16, 2025

For years—decades—we have gone tent camping at a State beach in Santa Cruz. We usually stay a whole week and we love it, we have always loved it. Although we sleep in tents, we don’t exactly rough it. We have…
