In the Kitchen with Polly

"It's all about the recipe!"

Author: Polly

It's all about the recipe. Really, it is. I have amassed quite a collection of recipes from my favorite cookbooks, food magazines, friends, the Internet, and more recently my adult daughters. I test every recipe I post. Some I've been cooking for years, decades even, a few I have made only a few times. I don't post mediocre recipes. I don't post good recipes. I post GREAT recipes. I started “In the Kitchen with Polly” on January 1, 2010, a joint venture between myself and my non-cooking but most excellent webmaster, proofreader, technical goddess and all-around bestie, Ratty. (Not a joke. Ratty is her chosen name. Her Mama didn’t do that to her, she did it to herself.) Last year we hit a snag. The website went up in flames. Monstrous flames. It took a long time to sort out what happened and even longer to recreate what was lost. Hundreds of pictures, gone, and every recipe we posted (300+) over the last 14 years had to be reformatted. It's done now though. I like this brighter version. Scroll through. Find something you like. There’s a search button and there are also tags to click on if you want to find a recipe for a specific food. If you need it, the print button is on the preview page and at the end of the recipe page. Enjoy! Let me know if you try something!

Blueberry Chip Cookies

PollyJuly 26, 2011August 23, 2025

Hey world, there’s a new cookie on the plate!  It’s sort of like a chocolate chip cookie—it has all the best elements of a chocolate chip cookie—it crunches like a chocolate chip cookie, and is crisp around the edges and…

Beef Skewers

Meat on a stick! Is there anything better? When I was pregnant with my first child, my cravings were iced tea, tomato soup, and “tasty chunks of beef”! Twenty-six year later, I still crave tasty chunks of beef! This is a very…

Traditional Arabic Hummus

PollyJuly 22, 2011July 24, 2025

Traditional Arabic hummus—how do I know its traditional? Because I learned how to make it from my Saudi and Kuwaiti students in 1981 and 1982. I watched how they made it, wrote everything down, and have followed the recipe ever since.  Well,…

I am sooooo bad. I KNOW I shouldn’t cook like this. I know it, I know it, I know it! But I did. And my little experiment turned out too wonderfully well 🙂 Who knew homemade corn dogs were so easy to make?! I…

Harry Potter 2011—a flash from the past! My 20-year-old twins have tickets to the midnight show—of course they do. They were in second grade when I read the first book to them. Next thing I know, we’re at a bookstore at…

Ever eaten raw fennel? Time to start! And here’s a fabulous recipe to start with: Raw Fennel and Apple Salad. It’s easy to make and it’s shockingly good. I say shockingly because everyone I coerce into trying it has been…

Yellow Cake with Chocolate Frosting

PollyJune 17, 2011August 11, 2025

Who doesn’t like yellow cake with chocolate frosting?  It’s a classic!  This recipe and photo is from Cook’s Illustrated. The little editorial near the recipe on page 51 of the Spring 2011 edition of Cook’s said everything I want to…

Chocolate-Peanut Butter Popcorn

PollyJune 14, 2011March 7, 2026

This recipe is almost the same recipe as Muddy Buddies, but using popcorn instead of Rice Chex!  It’s a cinch to pull together, and it’s melt-in-your mouth delicious 🙂  I mean, seriously addictive. I am pretty sure you have all…
