Poached Shrimp for Lots of Things

PollyJuly 17, 2020July 18, 2025

Like tossing into a salad, putting in a tea sandwich with cucumbers, as a retro shrimp cocktail appetizer, or to serve as an appetizer with toothpicks and a favorite sauce or dip 🙂 The recipe and accompanying photo is from…

Fresh Cherry Salsa

PollyMay 27, 2020August 28, 2025

I am fortunate to live in an area with some remaining cherry orchards. For a few weeks each year these orchards are open for U-Pick cherries.  Seeing as how we are in the midst of a pandemic—80 days of Shelter-In-Place…

Homemade Ranch Dressing

PollyJuly 9, 2019September 3, 2025

I had a rather unfortunate accident with a new immersion blender yesterday.  Ranch dressing EVERYWHERE, and very little left in the bowl.  Ranch dressing on the counter, down the doors, all over me, on the floor, on the backsplash! White…

Homemade Ketchup

PollyJuly 26, 2016August 28, 2025

Every year I plant tomatoes and every year, for a period of a few weeks, I have more tomatoes than any one family could ever use. I have some recipes on this blog that call for a lot of homegrown…

‘Magic Shell’ Topping for Ice Cream

PollyJuly 21, 2013August 28, 2025

It’s summer!  Time for ice cream, and one of the easiest recipes ever posted on this site! Magic Shell! You know the stuff, right?  You squeeze the chocolate-y liquid onto ice cream and it hardens up almost immediately.  Then you…

Traditional Arabic Hummus

PollyJuly 22, 2011July 24, 2025

Traditional Arabic hummus—how do I know its traditional? Because I learned how to make it from my Saudi and Kuwaiti students in 1981 and 1982. I watched how they made it, wrote everything down, and have followed the recipe ever since.  Well,…

About Me

polly of the kitchen

It's all about the recipe—really, it is! I have amassed quite a collection of recipes from my favorite cookbooks, food magazines, friends, the Internet, and more recently my adult daughters. I test every recipe I post. Some I've been cooking for years, decades even, and a few I have made only a few times. I don't post mediocre recipes. I don't post good recipes. I post GREAT recipes! When I find a recipe I LOVE, I can't wait to share it. I started In the Kitchen with Polly on January 01, 2010, a joint venture between myself and my non-cooking but most excellent webmaster, proofreader, technical goddess and all-around bestie, ratty (not a joke—ratty is her chosen nickname—her Mama didn’t do that to her, she did it to herself!). Last year we hit a snag—the website went up in monstrous flames. It took a long time to sort out what happened and even longer to recreate what was lost. Hundreds of pictures gone, and every recipe we posted (300+) over the last 14 years had to be reformatted, many pictures retaken. It's done now though, and we are back! I like this brighter version :) Scroll through! Find something you like, and let's get cooking! There’s a search button and there are also tags to click on if you want to find a recipe for a specific food. If you need it, the print button is on the preview page and at the end of each post.

Enjoy!
