In the Kitchen with Polly

"It's all about the recipe!"

Author: Polly

It's all about the recipe. Really, it is. I have amassed quite a collection of recipes from my favorite cookbooks, food magazines, friends, the Internet, and more recently my adult daughters. I test every recipe I post. Some I've been cooking for years, decades even, a few I have made only a few times. I don't post mediocre recipes. I don't post good recipes. I post GREAT recipes. I started “In the Kitchen with Polly” on January 1, 2010, a joint venture between myself and my non-cooking but most excellent webmaster, proofreader, technical goddess and all-around bestie, Ratty. (Not a joke. Ratty is her chosen name. Her Mama didn’t do that to her, she did it to herself.) Last year we hit a snag. The website went up in flames. Monstrous flames. It took a long time to sort out what happened and even longer to recreate what was lost. Hundreds of pictures, gone, and every recipe we posted (300+) over the last 14 years had to be reformatted. It's done now though. I like this brighter version. Scroll through. Find something you like. There’s a search button and there are also tags to click on if you want to find a recipe for a specific food. If you need it, the print button is on the preview page and at the end of the recipe page. Enjoy! One caveat: I am not a food photographer or professional blogger. I have a cell phone, but harnessing the light and plating a dish are not skills of mine. Please don't judge a recipe by my photos. I promise your dishes will look much better IRL. Polly

My friend Karin made this for our Cookbook Club’s Snow Holiday.  I ate it the morning she made it, and had it again for the following three mornings…loved it! She learned to make this from her cousin in Germany; she’d…

I definitely need a better picture. Looking for something new for lunch? I have the perfect thing!  This lunch has to be baked, so it’s a great fall-winter recipe. I found it at Simply Recipes awhile back—picture cred to Simply Recipes,…

Last family BBQ of the season?  I wish I had posted this recipe as a season opener so that we could have had enjoyed this drink throughout the summer, but at least it is posted in time for the last…

It was time for my cookbook club’s “Signature Cake” meeting.  A “Signature Cake”, is show-y cake, one that we might become remembered for. A special cake our family and friends might look forward to, or even ask for, on birthdays and special…

Fried Chicken

I know this chicken leg has a waffle under it, but this recipe just focuses on the actual fried chicken. Chicken n’ waffles will come later 🙂 Frying chicken wasn’t just another hedonistic pursuit, you know. I had a good reason—a…

Blueberry Chip Cookies

PollyJuly 26, 2011August 23, 2025

Hey world, there’s a new cookie on the plate!  It’s sort of like a chocolate chip cookie—it has all the best elements of a chocolate chip cookie—it crunches like a chocolate chip cookie, and is crisp around the edges and…

Meat on a stick! Is there anything better? When I was pregnant with my first child, my cravings were iced tea, tomato soup, and “tasty chunks of beef”! Twenty-six year later, I still crave tasty chunks of beef! This is a very…

Traditional Arabic Hummus

PollyJuly 22, 2011July 24, 2025

Traditional Arabic hummus—how do I know its traditional? Because I learned how to make it from my Saudi and Kuwaiti students in 1981 and 1982. I watched how they made it, wrote everything down, and have followed the recipe ever since.  Well,…
